1. PCGS-001-9-5. 2009-D Lincoln Formative Years cent, Stars and Stripes label, no grade. Label: Long Beach Expo / Feb 2013.

Although not labeled as such, this slab was a prize for the children’s Treasure Hunt activity held at this show each Saturday. Long Beach YN slabs bring good prices.

2. PCGS-005-3-2. 1928-S Buffalo nickel, green label, no grade. Serial 3914 .00/12345678. The PCGS Buffalo nickels are some of the most valuable and desirable samples. he is

both a date and a mintmark, so I am asking a little over catalog value. Most have no date of any type. Plate coin in Sample Slabs. I am not 100% sure I want to sell this one — this is the sort of sample (a PCGS green label with a pre-modern coin) that is likely to tise.

2 PCGS type 23. 2005-D Jefferson Bison nickel, blue label without bar code, no grade. Serial 4159.00/7141540. $9

4. PCGS-010-3-7. 1964-D Roosevelt dime, green label, MS65. Serial 654321.65/12345678.

Although this appears at first glance to be one of the very common PCGS green label dimes, the four dots surrounding the larger circle show that this is a better variety. This is a transitional type using the three-part holder of the doily with the later-style solid green label. Plate

6. PCGS-025-4-27. 2005-D California quarter, blue label, no grade. Label: Merry Christmas / 2005.

With the permission of his employer, a PCGS grader made about 10 of these slabs as Christmas gifts for friends and family. PCGS made plenty of samples for the public and limited samples for special customers. You will almost never, however, see a slab like this one

10. NGC-001-3-2. 1943 Lincoln cent, gteen to grey label w/o bar code, grade MS 64. Serial 209440-0106.

I am categorizing this one as a generation 3 (brown label wit de) even though is not ¢ to firmly place as a generation 2 green label. Someday a researcher will figure out the difference, if any, between NGC ereen and grey. Unlike most NGC steel cents, this one does not have “NGC” after the grade, making it a somewhat better type.

One of my favorite things about samples is the way that new varieties turn up every month. Neither Cameron Kiefer nor I knew about this one. Around 2004, NGC offered this blue label with custom lettering for promotional slabs. See NGC-025-9-2 and NGC-025-9-3 for similar pieces.

See NGC-050-4-1 in the catalog for a detailed description. This is the better variety with “NGR” after the date. A grungy coin in a nice holder. Some have sold for as much as $100. Plate coin in Sample Slabs.

16. NGC-unlisted. 1963 Great Britain penny, brown label with bar code, grade SAMPLE FA 00 NGC. Serial 199999-021.

This unlisted world coin sample is the same as NGC-Gd1-4-1 (catalog value $80) except for the serial number. The label reads 1963 but the coin is a 1964. When the label and coin do not agree, how should we list them? We collect slabs more than coins, so I usually go with the label.

NGC-025-4-6. Delaware quarter reverse up, serial 005684-037.

NGC-025-4-7. Delaware quarter obverse up, serial 005684-038.

Currency collectors look for changeover pairs — notes with sequential serial numbers from different series. Here we have a similar situation with early state quarter samples, with these sequential slabs showing the different face up and face down varieties. 005684-037 is the

plate coin in Sample Slabs. $29

18. Trio of sequential NGC dollar samples

NGC-unlisted. 2007-D Madison dollars. Serials 2055037-107, 108, and 109.

Although the labeling is similar to Treasure Trivia slabs, these are labeled as standard samples. Someone had the foresight to keep all three together. I collect matching number NGC samples and considered starting to save sequential numbers as well. I can’t collect everything, however, so these are yours for

These three common NGC state quarters were the plate coins in Sample Slabs. Does this add to their modest catalog values of $7, $10, and $8? Let’s find out.

20. ANACS Unlisted. 1870-1871 French Bronze 30mm medal. Obverse Marianne (the French Uncle Sam), reverse flags and weapons with “aux defenseurs de la patrie.” (the defenders of the homeland). Yellow label: "Medals, the other numismatic / collectible!" / from the world famous / Mad Marty Collection / www.holylands.com.” Reverse label: "Sample - Not for resale / ANACS has not verified the / Authenticity or Attribution of this item."

Mad Marty sold 18 assorted American, French, German, and British medal samples on eBay in April 2015, all unique. Based on the dates and wording, I would guess that this is a military medal given to veterans of the Franco-Prussian War.

25. PCGS Currency-Nc1-2-1. 1991 Nicaragua 1 centavo, serial A/C 8342506, grade 66PPQ. This is not a flattering portrait of the famous conquistador Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba, founder of Nicaragua. Take away the facial hair and you have Bert from Sesame Street. But what do you expect for one centavo? Nothing wrong with the holder, however. PCGS Currency gave these graded and serial numbered samples to new members of their collector club.

Last-Minute Update: New world coin show slab available

The Glendale Coin Club holds its annual coin show this Sunday 10/25 in Van Nuys, California. ANACS made 50 slabs for the event, each with a 1966 — 1970 Panama half balboa. World coins made in America are one of my collecting interests and the U.S. Mint made these coins on 40% silver Kennedy planchets. You can get them at the show for $20 and remaining slabs will sell for $25 with shipping. See glencoin.com for show information or email mike@kittlecoins.com on the slabs.
