candidates whose naines were men- tioned to retire from the field. That subsequent ballots be taken until one the candidate should re- ceive an’ absolute majority of the votes cast,

Upon the taking of the informal ballot, 8. Wilson, C. H. Swanson, Peter Talbot, A. C. Rutherford, M McCauley, J. A. Simpson, Dr. W. McIntyre, A. S. Rosenroll, C. D, Algar and A. R. Dickson were placed in aomination as candidates to contest the seat.

Mr. Wilson was first called upon to address the meeting. Ina brief but forcible manner he explained why it was to the interests of the people of the west to support the |principles of the Liberai party. Low tariff and additional transpor- | tation facilities were the greatest needs of the west.

Peter Talbot, M.L.A., was the uext speaker and his advance to the platform was greeted with pro- longed applause, clearly showing the popularity he has among the |people of the constituency. He

lford, M. L. A., for years, having een a seat mate at school thirty years ayo. If Mr. Rutherford

vould stand for nomination he

would not allow his name to go be fore the convention. If Mr. | \uthford declined, it was perhaps his duty to allow his name to be }yoted upon. In an eloquent and

impressive address he showed how

jand why the Northwest had pros. |

}pered under the Liberal govern. |ment, as lead by that greatest of all modern statesman, Sir Wilfred Laurier. What the west wants is more people. This the west never

er one of terms. If we can secure proper and just terms then the Territories should be given aut- opomy. Mr. Talbot concluded by stating that whoever secured the nomination of the convention he was prepared to work night aud day for his support.

Mr. Rutherford, M. L. A., was next called tothe platform amid ringing cheers, “It was plainly evident that Mr, Rutherford was the choice of the delegates present as their standard bearer. The speaker stated than in view of tlie evidence shown him that the ceh- stitaency wanted him to lead them in the coming campaign that for business and personal reasons it would be impossible for him to accept the nomination, and he took pleasure in retiring in favor of Mr. Talbot.

M. McCauley, Dr. McIntyre, C. D. Algar, A. R, Dickson and A. S. Rosenroll each _ withdrew their names from the convention by de- liverirg brief, but forcible addres. ses,

A ballot was then taken in which Mr. Telbot, M. L.A, received a very large majority of the- votes and in the midst Of three rousing cheers was elected nominee of the convention. i

After the adoption of the resolu- tions, addresses were delivered by C. W. Cross, of Edmonton; C. C. Reed, of Ponoka; Geo. Smith, of Duhamel; J. @. Tipton, of Strath- cona; A. S. Rosenroll, M L A., and several others.

After successive cheers for the newly chosen nominee and the | rendering of “God Save the King” perhaps the most successful and harmonious political convention ever held in Alberta came to a close,

Canadian Pacific Lands

F. T. Griffin, manager of the land department of the Canadian Pacific Railway, says:—

“While the company does not expect to sell as many acres this year as it has during some other seasons, it does expect to make more sales to actual settlers than ever before, These settlers will come largely from the UnitedStates although a big Simmigration will also arrive Troi Phropé. We are making any effdrt to sell land in large tracts.

“Large sales will also, no doubt be made to settlers who have taken up Manitoba or Northwest Terri- tories homesteads during the past few years. These men have come to the conclugion that they need more the homestead allotment of 160 acres and will make the pur- chase now while land is still cheap. Even in the Galician settlements sales are quite active, many of the colonists adding an additional quarter section or more to their homesteads.

“The average price of Canadian Pacific Railway land is now be- tween $5 and $6 an acre. Two years ago this land could almost uniformly be purchased for $3 an acre and it is not unreasonable to suppose that any good agriculture land within a reasonable distance }of a railway will within two or

|three years be worth $10 an acre which is now practically the maxi- mum price of the railway lands.

| “The highest priced farming | properties of the Canadian Pacific

Railway are now situated in Mani-|

toba and southeastern Assiniboia. These lands are held at about $10 jan acre though sections near town sites sometimes sell from $20 for from $20 to $80 an acre,

choice

“At the present time the undis- posed of lands of the Canadian Pacific Railway amount to 12,000,-

| 000 acres of which 850,000 are sit- juated in Manitoba. Two years ago the company did not hold over

te ;A MMIC acy

es of its land at $3 an acre and this included the holdings jin Manitoba aud southeastern As- siniboia, Now there are not over a milion acres of the company’s

Cow bells that chime on the western plains, sheep bells that tinkle on the big American sheep ranches, bells for

grazing horses and mules and, accord- ing to Popular Mechanics, all kinds of bells for the farm and ranch are made in one factory, which stands on a hill- FRENCH side street in a little town in Connectl-

gize Article on Its Pursuit as a Pastime —Muay Be Followed at All Times ‘by Those Who Huve Eyes,

@f any pastime or pursuit none, in my opinion, can be more fascinating than the study of birds. It is a Bub.ect that should interest every Canadian, for our insectivorous birds

you do not intend them any harm. It is a pastime that will cultivate | the highest traits of perseverance | and minute observation, and in time you may have the pleasure of add- | ing “a new fact to the world's stock let knowledge."’ Vienty of Material,

The one who takes up this pastime will find in this country plenty of material to work upon, for we aro well supplied with birds. At all seasons of the year a certain num- ber are to be observed, Even in win- {cr time, we have, in addition to the

callous that no pain will be felt, and the nail can be trimmed regularly ance a week.

In the Olden Days of Crinoline,

A woman tells this of the old days of “cages;"

A man—an artist and @ very shy person—walked out with the woman he delighted to honor and asked her to marry him. In stepping closer to her, as the occasion seemed to demand, early In the walk he got his foot through her large and expansive hoop
